A K-1 petition asks for evidence that the parties met in person within the two years before filing and that the relationship is ongoing. Photographs and travel documents speak to the meeting; the conversation speaks to the continuity.
Continuity is a shape, not a claim
A record shows the pattern: how often contact happened, across what span, where the quiet stretches were and how long they ran. It reports the longest gap whether or not that number helps, because a record that hides its own weak points is easy to attack.
Contact begins
The export starts where the device's memory starts
Not where the conversation did. This is detectable from where the encryption notice sits, and it is stated rather than glossed over.
Before Nov 2023
Answered calls may be missing
WhatsApp wrote only missed calls into the thread before late 2023. A plain printout shows a couple who never spoke; this finds the boundary and explains it in writing.
Throughout
Durations are floors
WhatsApp truncates to the displayed unit, so totals are reported as “at least” rather than as exact.
If the conversation is not in English
It is translated message by message with the original beside the English, and the certificate 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires is signed by the person who reviewed it. Summaries are not permitted and are not produced.

Questions
- What can chat records actually show on a K-1 petition?
What was said, when, by whom, and how often — with every row traceable to the line of your own export it came from, so any figure can be checked against the original.
What they cannot show is the in-person meeting a K-1 requires evidence of. Messages around a trip corroborate that meeting; they do not replace the documents that establish it. We would rather say so here than have you discover it after filing.
- We only have screenshots. Is that enough, or do you need a full export?
Either works. An export gives more — call events, exact ordering, message counts — but screenshots are read too, and for apps that do not export anything they are the only route there is.
Both end up on the same timeline, in the same record, whichever apps they came from.
- Can you tell us whether our evidence is strong enough?
No, and we would treat anyone who does with suspicion. Acceptance is the adjudicator's decision, and no vendor controls it.
What is inside our control is meeting the stated requirement exactly: a full record rather than a selection, the certificate the regulation names, and every figure checkable against your own file. We do not score cases, predict outcomes or estimate risk.
This describes how a record and its translation are produced. It is not legal advice and not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. BonaFile is not a law firm, does not assess cases, and cannot promise how any filing will be decided.
